Service Schedule

Suzuki Jimny 5-Door (JC74) · K15B 1.5L · European Market

Table of Contents

Why bother reading this?

The Jimny is a simple, tough vehicle — but even the simplest machines need regular care. The K15B engine is virtually bulletproof, as long as you don't skip oil changes and filter replacements. This schedule combines official Suzuki guidelines for the European market, two years of daily driving my JC74 (GLX AT, MY2024), information from the owner's manual and dealer specs, and experience shared by other Jimny owners on forums and meetups.

The rule is simple: service intervals are based on mileage or time — whichever comes first. Drive only 5,000 km a year? You still change the oil every 12 months.

Normal vs Severe Conditions

Suzuki splits maintenance into two modes. Most Jimny owners fall under severe — because you didn't buy an off-roader just to drive on highways, right?

Severe conditions apply when:

  • You mostly drive short trips (under 6 km)
  • Frequent cold starts (under 16 km at sub-zero temperatures)
  • Engine often idles (city traffic jams)
  • Driving on gravel, dusty or salt-treated roads
  • Off-road use (mud, rocks, water crossings)
  • High RPM driving or towing a trailer
  • Commercial use (taxi, delivery)

If even one of these applies — use the severe conditions schedule. From experience: in Central European conditions, with our roads and winters, almost every Jimny qualifies as "severe".

K15B Engine

Engine Oil and Filter

This is the single most important item on the entire schedule. The K15B engine holds 3.6 litres of oil (with filter).

Condition ACEA / Genuine Suzuki Oil Other Oils
Normal every 20,000 km / 12 months every 15,000 km / 12 months
Severe every 10,000 km / 6 months every 7,500 km / 6 months

Recommended oil (Europe/Israel):

  • Classification: ACEA A1/B1, A3/B3, A3/B4, A5/B5
  • API: SL, SM, SN or SP
  • ILSAC: GF-3, GF-4, GF-5 or GF-6
  • Viscosity: SAE 0W-16 (recommended), 0W-20 or 5W-30

Suzuki officially promotes ECSTAR oils. On the European market you can also use Mobil 1 0W-20, Shell Helix Ultra 0W-20, Castrol Magnatec 0W-20 — as long as they meet the ACEA and API ratings.

Drain plug torque: 35 Nm (3.6 kgf-m).

Resetting the oil change indicator: After every oil and filter change, you must reset the monitoring system. On the instrument display, go to settings (button on the steering wheel), find "Oil change" and hold the display button for a few seconds until it resets. Without this, the lamp will keep glowing despite fresh oil.

Drive Belt

Powers the alternator, A/C compressor and coolant pump. Check tension every 40,000 km / 24 months, replace when worn. Belt deflection under 100 N load:

  • New: 4.8–5.9 mm
  • Adjustment: 6.2–7.1 mm

Spark Plugs

The Jimny uses iridium plugs — more expensive, but they last significantly longer than standard nickel ones.

Condition Replacement Interval
Normal every 100,000 km / 84 months
Severe every 30,000 km / 24 months

Plug type: DENSO ZXU20PR11 or NGK KR6A-10

Air Filter

Condition Inspection Replacement
Normal every 20,000 km / 12 mo. every 40,000 km / 36 mo.
Severe every 2,500 km (!!) every 30,000 km / 24 mo.

Yes, you read that right — under severe conditions, check the air filter every 2,500 km. If you do a lot of dusty off-road driving, this actually makes a lot of sense. I personally check the filter at every oil change and replace it immediately if it looks bad.

Coolant

System capacity: 5.0 L (manual) / 4.9 L (automatic), including expansion tank.

Suzuki offers two coolant types — and this matters for replacement timing:

Coolant First Replacement Subsequent
SUZUKI LLC Super (blue) 160,000 km / 96 mo. every 80,000 km / 48 mo.
SUZUKI LLC Standard (green) 40,000 km / 36 mo. every 40,000 km / 36 mo.

If you're not sure which coolant is in your car — especially if you bought it used — it's safer to assume the "green" schedule and replace it at the next service.

Check the coolant level regularly — a quick glance at the expansion tank each time you refuel is enough.

Drivetrain

Manual Transmission (5MT)

  • Oil: SUZUKI GEAR OIL 75W (part no. 99000-22B27-036)
  • Capacity: 1.2 L
  • Inspection: every 40,000 km / 24 months (normal), every 20,000 km / 12 mo. (severe)

Alternatives: Shell Spirax S4 G 75W-80, Red Line MT-LV 70W-75.

Automatic Transmission (4AT)

  • Fluid: SUZUKI ATF 3317 or Mobil ATF3309
  • Capacity: 5.7 L (total)
  • Level check: every 40,000 km / 24 months
  • Fluid change: every 165,000 km (normal), every 80,000 km (severe)
  • Hydraulic lines: every 60,000 km (inspection)

Important: The Jimny's automatic is a self-learning transmission, sensitive to fluid quality. Stick with the genuine ATF or carefully matched alternatives. Many owners on forums confirm — saving a few quid on cheaper ATF tends to end with a more expensive visit to the mechanic.

Transfer Case

  • Oil: SUZUKI GEAR OIL 75W
  • Capacity: 1.21 L
  • Inspection: every 40,000 km / 24 months (normal), every 20,000 km / 12 mo. (severe)

Differentials (Front and Rear)

  • Oil: SUZUKI SUPER GEAR OIL 75W-85 SYNTHETIC
  • Capacity: front 1.6 L / rear 1.3 L
  • Replacement (normal): approx. every 40,000 km
  • Replacement (severe): every 80,000 km / 48 months

Differentials require GL-5 rated oil with EP (Extreme Pressure) additives. Synthetic is strongly recommended — especially for the front differential, which works under heavier loads.

Brakes

Component Inspection Interval
Discs and pads (front) every 20,000 km / 12 mo.
Drums and shoes (rear) every 20,000 km / 12 mo.
Brake lines every 40,000 km / 24 mo.
Brake pedal every 40,000 km / 24 mo.
Parking brake adjustment after first 20,000 km

Brake Fluid

  • Type: DOT3 (SAE J1703) — DOT4 also acceptable
  • Replacement: every 40,000 km / 24 months
  • Note: On manual transmission models, the braking system and clutch share a common fluid reservoir!

Wear limits:

  • Minimum front brake disc thickness: 8.0 mm (below = mandatory replacement)
  • Maximum rear brake drum inner diameter: 222 mm (above = mandatory replacement)

Suzuki officially recommends ECSTAR brake fluid.

Chassis and Body

Component Inspection Interval
Wheel bearings every 40,000 km / 24 mo.
Drive shafts every 40,000 km / 24 mo.
Suspension every 40,000 km / 24 mo.
Steering every 40,000 km / 24 mo.
Tyres and wheels every 20,000 km / 12 mo.
Latches, hinges and locks every 20,000 km / 12 mo.
Cabin air filter every 20,000 km / 12 mo. (inspect), every 40,000 km (replace)

Power steering in the Jimny JC74 is fully electric — no power steering fluid to change. One less thing to worry about.

Tyre rotation: Suzuki recommends rotating tyres every ~10,000 km. Pattern: front-to-rear (5 tyres including the spare) or front-to-rear (4 tyres).

Tyre pressure: Check at least once a month. Recommended values are on the sticker on the driver's door pillar. Tyre size: 195/80R15.

Emissions System

Component Interval
PCV valve every 80,000 km / 48 mo. (inspection)
Evaporative emissions system every 120,000 km (inspection)
Exhaust system (excl. catalytic converter) every 40,000 km / 24 mo.
Fuel lines every 40,000 km / 24 mo.
Fuel tank every 40,000 km / 24 mo.

Practical Tips

Oil change indicator lamp — The Jimny has a built-in oil change reminder. When it lights up, don't ignore it. After changing oil, reset the counter via the instrument display settings: find "Oil change", hold the display button for a few seconds until it resets.

Cabin air filter — Easily forgotten, but replacing it every year / 20,000 km really makes a difference, especially if you have allergies. Easy DIY job.

Battery — 45Ah isn't huge. If you're mounting extra LED lights, a winch or a camping fridge, consider a higher-capacity battery or a dual-battery setup.

Lubricating locks and hinges — Suzuki recommends every 20,000 km. In harsh climates, especially winter, do it more often. Frozen locks on a Jimny are a genre classic.

Shock absorbers — Gas-filled. Never disassemble them yourself. Have an authorised service centre handle disposal.

The Asterisk (*)

Items marked with an asterisk (*) in the official schedule should be carried out by an authorised Suzuki dealer or an experienced mechanic. The rest — if you have basic skills and tools — you can handle yourself.
